root canal

June 4th, 2013
Q.

I had a tempary root canal last year, and have not been back because they want to refill and put a silver or gold on the front of the tooth is there any other treatment or is this what has to be done.

Dear Fay,

The recommendations are that back teeth should be crowned (capped) after they have been root filled.
If they are not then they are likely to break and their outlook will be compromised.

There are different types of crowns, and they all have their advantages and disadvantages.
You would need to discuss these with your dentist.

I am concerned that a temporary root filling has been in place for a year.
If the temporary has leaked then bacteria in the mouth may have reinfected the root in which case the root filling may fail and need further treatment.
I would recommend that you get the treatment completed as soon as possible.
I hope that helps,

Regards,

James
