Extractions for braces

October 21st, 2012
Q.

Dr Mahony,

Do we always have to extract teeth to before we can have braces?

Thank you
L Denis

A.

The answer to your question is most definitely NO, you do not always have to extract teeth before braces. Infact nowadays modern orthodontists extract very few teeth world wide, but in different countries methods of practice vary. In my practice (like some practices in the UK) we extract in approx 10% of cases and that is not because of crowded teeth but because the patients facial profile will benefit from less teeth.
If you have been advised to have teeth removed I strongly suggest you get some more opinions and seek out dentists/orthodontists who say they are trained in dentofacial orthopaedics, they are more likely to expand the dental arch than remove teeth. Derek.
